bon markets need standards to enable continued growth

The voluntary carbon market must adopt robust standards to enable its continued growth, a panel of market experts has said. Speaking at the European Energy Exchange (EEX) Group sustainability conference, experts agreed that potential corporate buyers of voluntary carbon credits are put off by the complexity and fragmentation of the market. Experts said project-based carbon removal credits should offer more transparency. There is a need for standard definitions and thresholds of key removal concepts such as additionality, leakage and durability, to be able to account for carbon removals consistently across project types.
